The Department of Ecology was established on September 1, 2013, coinciding with the entry into force of the new Organizational and Operational Regulations of the Institute of Biology.

The current staff of the Department of Ecology previously worked in the Department of Animal Ecology and the Department of Plant Systematics and Geobotany.
