Ceremonial inauguration of the new doctoral graduates of the University of Pécs
On March 12 2026, the University of Pécs held its ceremonial Senate meeting for the conferral of doctoral degrees, combined with a commemoration of the Hungarian Revolution and War for Independence of 15th March 1848. At the event, held in the Dr. József Halasy-Nagy Auditorium of the Faculty of Business and Economics, the university’s most outstanding researchers received their PhD, DLA, and habilitation degrees.
The event was opened by Rector Dr. Attila Miseta, who - quoting József Eötvös (former Minister of Human Capacities of Hungary in the first independent Hungarian Government of 1848) - added the following thoughts to the commemoration and the ceremonial occasion: “Freedom does not mean that we can do whatever we want, but rather that we are not compelled to do what we do not want. And above all, it lies in the fact that we determine our own fate and are not mere instruments of others’ decisions.” József Eötvös’s words still serve as a compass for the new doctors today: the knowledge they have acquired is not merely a professional achievement, but also the guarantee of inner freedom. This title both empowers and obligates its holders to ensure that, through their research and decisions, they are not merely tools but shapers of the science and society of the future.
The most solemn moment of the event was the doctoral oath, during which the candidates, with their hands placed on the university’s sceptre, swore to uphold academic integrity and to enhance the university’s reputation.

The ceremony concluded with a speech by Vice Rector Dr. András Komócsi, in which he emphasized, drawing on the ideas of Peter Drucker, that “we are living in turbulent and rapidly changing times, in which it is not the turbulence itself that is dangerous, but rather acting according to yesterday’s logic.” The Vice Rector’s parting message carries a clear message: earning a doctoral degree is not the end of learning, but the beginning of a new, flexible way of thinking. The task of researchers stepping out from within the university’s walls is now to move beyond yesterday’s paradigms, provide fresh answers to today’s challenges, and bring stability to a changing world through their knowledge. We wholeheartedly congratulate our colleagues and wish them continued success!
