TTK success in scholarship competition for sustainable agriculture

AwardresearchScholarshipstudents

For the eleventh time, K&H announced the winners of its scholarship competition for sustainable agriculture, which aims to support the long-term sustainable development of Hungarian agriculture and the research work of future professionals. One of the categories in this year's competition was won by Marcell Imre, a student at the Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Pécs.

The initiative supports young researchers and students who are looking for innovative solutions to the challenges facing agriculture. This year's award-winning projects included ideas for developing ice cream made from buttermilk, precision irrigation GIS systems based on soil conditions, and technologies to help detect stress factors in precision corn cultivation.

A total of 28 projects were submitted for this year's competition. The winner of the Master's category was Marcell Imre, a student at the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Pécs. His project is the result of a complex research process that examines models for estimating evaporation, or potential evapotranspiration, in Hungary.

Marcell Imre primarily deals with soil science and soil chemistry, but his career path was born out of an interdisciplinary professional "detour." While preparing a study on soil science, the question arose as to how the rate of evaporation could be determined more accurately, so 18 different models were examined in terms of their applicability and limitations.

The research was carried out with the collaboration of Dr. Noémi Sarkadi, assistant professor, and Dr. Szabolcs Czigány, full professor. The results were also used to prepare an OTDK thesis, which won first place in the 2025 FiFöMa section. Based on this work, Marcell Imre also applied for the K&H scholarship.

The thesis is the fruit of a long process. Research is usually driven by curiosity, but of course it feels great when my work is recognized by others, said the award-winning student.

We sincerely congratulate the winner and wish him continued success!
