The department has been operating in its current form since January 1, 2000. Its predecessor was the Department of Genetics and Microbiology at JPTE.

Our department conducts research in two main directions: plant genetics and virology.

Our staff teaches the following subjects in the BSc training in biology and viticulture and in the undivided teacher training:
